Day 1:Dar Es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve:
Pick up from your hotel and begin to drive down south of of the city to Selous, the drive shall take 5 to 6 hours. You will arrive in time for lunch, at around 16:00 in the evening depart for sunset boat safari along the great Rufiji River to spotting hippos, crocodiles and birds, and enjoying the spectacular sundown.

Early morning walking safari usually start at 6-6.30am after first-morning tea or coffee, accompanied by an armed ranger, and it will take around 2-3 hours long. After enjoying your breakfast in the morning, check-out then begin the drive back to Dar es salaam seaport heading to Zanzibar or airport.
This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer. Selous Safari Holidays are highly recommended as in size this reserve is twice the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and three times Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The Tanzanian national park authority (TANAPA) in 2019 proposed and declared a change of identity of the northern sector of this reserve such that it is known as The Nyerere National Park as a way of honoring President Julius Nyerere who was the first president of Tanzania.
How to Get to Selous
By Road:
The Selous Game Reserve can be accessed on a road safari however, when traveling from Dar es Salaam, there is a direct route that covers a distance of 240 km / 149 miles following the eastern road. The drive is bumpy and long taking you 6 to 7 hours which is nearly half a day’s drive.
By Railroad System:
The other way to access the Selous Reserve is by using the TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia Railway). It begins in Dar es Salaam, and takes you on an adventure through the trails in Tanzania’s wilderness up to the Matambwe railway. On this journey, you will enjoy the attractiveness of the green countryside. The ride takes 4 to 5 hours.
By Air Transport:
The third alternative to get to Selous Game Reserve is by using a charter flight. There are numerous departure flights connecting from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Arusha that land at different accommodations or public access airstrips.
